Chungbuk Cheongju shares pain of ‘Osong underpass tragedy’ in special home game
Chungbuk Cheongju Professional Football Club came from behind to defeat Seoul Eland 2-1 in the 23rd round of the Hana OneQ K League 2 2023 at Cheongju Stadium on Wednesday. There is a story that made the upset win even more meaningful for Chungbuk Cheongju.
On the 15th, a tragic accident occurred at the Gungpyeong 2 underpass in Osong-eup, Cheongju, Chungbuk, resulting in multiple casualties. In response, Chungbuk Cheongju prepared black armbands at the suggestion of the players and wore them from the away game against Bucheon on the 18th.
The 23rd was the first home game after the tragedy. Before the game, head coach Choi Yoon-gyeom said, “It’s really unfortunate that it’s still raining today, as the flood recovery hasn’t been finalized. We want to do our best to provide a little comfort to the people of Chungbuk-do and Cheongju,” he said.
Chungbuk Cheongju minimized its home events for the day. They canceled all off-field events and minimized in-stadium events. One minute before the start of the game, both teams and all spectators observed a moment of silence. It was a moment where everyone expressed their condolences.
The Chungbuk Cheongju supporters stopped cheering for 140 seconds to honor the 14 victims of the tragedy. At the same time, they held up banners expressing their condolences.
